About the Dilemma ConsultancyThis dilemma question came from my observation and fieldwork when I'm engaging with new teachers. I see there might be a big improvement space for our human resource design as well as the organizational development design. Because one of the biggest needs is that the on-boarding support and scaffold for new teacher professional path development is insufficient. And it's one of the reasons why new teachers are suffering from feeling not effective in implementing some teaching activities at school (for example: Advisory, staff meeting etc.)
My curiosity of the dilemma is amplified when I'm reflecting on how to support new teachers developing their sense of purpose and cultivate their self-efficacy. As far as I know, there is no something like performance appraisal and mechanism for rewarding and inspiring talented people? Let's put our "Advisory Action Group" at HTHPL as an example, four teachers (3 veteran teachers and 1 new teacher, SDTR alumni) and the director of college advising formed this group devising how Wednesday advisory can be more beneficial to our students and the community. However, after participating in one weekly meeting of the group, I'm wondering who could be the person/team supporting these groups when we are hoping to address our organization's culture and values? (since we have some other action groups like "DEI action group" and "PD action group") And what motivates these action groups to continue striving for excellent action taking? I guess what I'm feeling right now is that I see some problems about instructional leadership and managing the learning environment but I don't know how and where to tackle them--"a good dilemma is one you can’t figure out on your own if you just had more time. And solving it (or understanding it better) would push your work forward."--so I bring it up. |
The takeaway from the Campus Visit & NSCF Spring Residency--COMMUNITY!
This experience really spark my passion about community building! How can we build up a community consistently that a place where kids can find their belonging, kids can feel be love, and feel their own freedom? I am aspiring to create a community that kids see they are nurtured here, and we respect their individuality and variability here, and we also expect rigorous academic mindset and performance here. The visible part is the tip of ice-berg that kids exceed in social, emotional and academic learning development, and what is keeping the visible part growing and thriving is the invisible part: Community! The alumni of my master's program, director of Latitude High--Lilian Hsu's sharing about "Crisis Leadership" really touch my soul. My big takeaway from her is that even though Pandemic is breaking down a lot of things in a negative way, it also bring us a chance to reflect a radical leadership lens. Pandemic has changed so many things and one of them is how we see this world, and how do we see ourselves in this world, what kind of world do we hope to live in?
